Just throw it in the bag

I’ve been spending an inordinate amount of time at home over the last week and a half because flatly, it’s just too damn cold. As the rest of you New Yorkers may relate, I’ve been finding all different things within the four brick walls of my apartment to occupy my time. In going through my closet (for an upcoming project, just wait on it), I realized in my few weeks spent out of the city this winter, I always pack one shirt.

I wish I bought it in both black and white at this point. At from a brand called Lucca Couture, at $29 from $62 on Gilt, it is absolutely my loss. It’s cotton and I’ve worn it for everything from a panel discussion on digital and streetwear, to out on a boat and around Wynwood in Miami, to the Dimepiece LA office (pictured).

It’s actually packed in my suitcase right now.

Who do we talk to about inside pockets for women’s coats?

So we saw my men’s jacket, essentially (hopefully) appropriate for my figure. Still had a waist and fell right below the widest part of my hips/thighs which is surprisingly wonderful since I’m taking an apparent hiatus from women’s clothes.

Did I fail to mention we showed up to the Gilt sale with an actual team? Sarah, one of my roommates also picked up a men’s coat at the Gilt sale. She actually has that great boyish figure and skinny legs. A completely different look, but this Hickey Freeman coat works amazing for her too.

She picked up this camel, suede coat for $159 from 785. The length of the sleeves allowed for her to cuff them, exposing the interior print.

I’m trying to tell you boys, anything you can do we can do better.

I’m not new to this

As I’ve repeatedly mentioned on Twitter (@raewitte, shameless plug), I’ve purchased more men’s than women’s clothes in the past couple weeks. Realistically, I thought the Gilt City sale would bring a little disruption to the pattern. It didn’t.

Boys’ sneakers and pants have become the norm but now I have add to jackets to the mix with this Paul Smith coat I picked up literally walking to check out at Gilt City’s Raid the Warehouse Sale on Saturday morning. And at $149 from $985… let me repeat that, at $149 from $985, I may actually feel guilty for how inexpensive it was. Regardless, I love it in navy blue as I’ve seen similar coats in green or black but not this.

Dear boys,

It seems as though I’m going to steal your clothes or just buy them myself and wear them better. <3

I am not quite sure what it is.  I can only assume, it’s the need for warmer clothes, lots of warmer clothes.  Sandals, cut offs and a bikini top simply won’t cut it lately. While one of my best girlfriends sent me a video from the Lincoln Road vintage market we used to frequent, I headed to the the Union Square Holiday Market.  At about a 60+ degree difference, my wardrobe is definitely adjusted.

But seriously, this weather just makes me want to wear men’s clothes, no lie.  I mean, I want to have leggings or my jeans, but hats, sneakers, over-sized sweaters, more masculine button ups and coats, ALL OF THAT.

I recently went to one of my favorite bi-annual events, the Gilt City #RaidtheWarehouse sale.  If you aren’t signed up yet, click here and do so!  I’ve attended and written about it numerous times.  After thoroughly shopping the women’s section, I headed over to the men’s side.

In the men’s accessories section I picked up this Trillby Woolrich, crushable wool hat.  Sold.  From $60 to $29 with an additional 15% off because I test drove a drop top Infiniti bringing the cost down to $25.  Don’t mind if I do, thank you.

Conveniently, I went from having more girlfriends in Miami to being closer to more of my boys here.  Watch your closets boys, my winter wardrobe is lacking.

upgrades and options

Years ago,  probably in 2009, where daily I’m realizing how much cooler I was, I picked up a beautiful leather, small, black cross body bag for $75 marked down from some ridiculous price that I don’t remember, from TJ Maxx.  Yes, I’ve always shopped like this.

Prior to my 10 days running around the northeast I ordered a beautiful new cross body, mainly to go out with.  The Ferragamo is my primary nighttime clutch and it has seen better days.  Unfortunately, I did not get my Gilt order in early enough for the bag to make the trip nor did I remember to have it sent to any of my crash spots, but like Kanye declares “how you gonna be mad on vacation?”   So upon my return to “the bottom”, I came home to a Gilt branded box, which can brighten any day even one that starts with saying bye bye to one of your besties at 4am outside of the airport.

This Kelsi Dagger, tastefully studded cross body, is much more of a statement type of bag, which works for me as I tend to wear predominantly black, neutrals and subtle jewelry.  It is black suede with a nude leather (which you know I can’t say no to) strap and has three pockets on the inside.  At $59.99 (before shipping) it was marked down from the 40% from the original $98.

Although it didn’t make the trip where it certainly would’ve been put to use, I wore it Friday night to Catch and SL Miami.  Mission accomplished.  Four years later, I have one staple black, worn to perfection, old cross body and a brand new upgraded statement option.  And I love options.

We did it!

The morning after, we did it.

starbucks intercontinental Miami

I made it.  I made it through 10 weeks of campaigning to raise money for cancer research through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with tons of support and help from loved ones and total strangers.  I am not sure I can really put into words what an incredible experience this has been because honestly, until Saturday, April 20, the night of the grand finale, surrounded by close friends, I absolutely had no idea what a big deal being a nominee and participant in the LLS Man & Woman of the Year Campaign was.

Do you know what WE did?  We raised nearly $10,000, almost TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS.  And it was tough.  If you know me personally, you know I prefer not to ask for anything from anyone but I had to ask everyone I know for money and to spread the word.  We sent letters (in the mail!), we wrote blogs, we sent emails and I may or may not have sent some aggressive texts messages and I definitely judged if you didn’t support (just saying, that’s reality).  We posted on Facebook, on Twitter, on Instagram, on LinkedIn.

And you know what else?  At the close of the Champions of Hope Gala after all the nominees had been recognized, after all of the city of Miami’s cheeks had been air-kissed, after every single champagne bottle had been popped and served, I stopped to hug my campaign manager and thank her and she told me, “I think you are the youngest person to have ever gone through with the campaign in South Florida.”  To which I promptly responded, “I am not that young.”  Sure enough, she was right so I need to really thank everyone who helped because we were the youngest network for sure.

Now, being that we were probably the youngest table at the gala, my friends and I could not disappoint and like truly appropriate adults, we held champagne glasses like mics and asked each other “who are you wearing tonight?”  Between the jokes and the Vine-ing (what better opportunity for 6 second videos), we overloaded Instagram and I have news, we cleaned up well!

So, I wore a black, (obviously) slinky BCBG dress that I picked up at Sawgrass Mills Mall, BCBG Outlet.  I was prepared to drop anywhere from $100-200.  I walked into BCBG, the first stop that day, and was done in 30 minutes.  The dress was only $108 originally.  I paid $49, a 55% discount.  The necklace, I picked up at the Loehmann’s in Midtown.  It was originally $49, marked down to $29 with an additional in-store special 20% off, so I paid about $23.  I then pulled out my beautiful Rebecca Minkoff, Bombshell, nude leather (so soft) shoes that were originally $325 that I picked up awhile ago at a Gilt Warehouse sale for $75.

The total for my outfit would’ve been $482, I paid $147.  With that and the almost $10,000 raised – I feel like a winner.  Thank you everyone!!

Also, just found out you can still donate until June 30 through my campaign.  Think we can reach over $10,000?  Donate by clicking the image below.

I’ve never enjoyed waking up on a Saturday morning more

I kind of feel like I need to set the scene for this one.

10AM Saturday morning and the alarm is going off.  Dear God, why?  Right, I’m getting my hair done today.  And the alarm is so necessary because I opted against being designated driver and chose to enjoy some adult beverages.  I actually don’t think I am hungover but I sure don’t want to leave my bed.

Made it to Midtown, stopped in Acme Bakery, got myself a “Dark and Stormy”.  I can’t remember what it is but I can tell you it was good and rather appropriate for the monsoon that was about to take place.

First and foremost, as I walk in Prince is playing.  I have a very soft spot in my heart from a well-timed Prince song from some great nights spent boogying at Space 26 back home.  Once introduced to Karuna, my new stylist, I was offered coffee, water, whatever, my attention span was minimal as the rain started and Whitney Houston came through the speakers.  Karuna and I spoke about the color I was looking for, went through some pics of an old style I had and loved.  Looking back I probably seemed a little short but I was just in a little baby coma, taking in all the artwork (that’s all for sale) and other awesomeness  plastered on the walls and floor of the salon.  Then En Vogue comes on, followed by Ginuwine, Usher’s “You make me wanna” and Jagged Edge.  It’s about now I start texting my friends to recommend the salon and Karuna hasn’t even done anything to my hair yet.

selfie before red hair

Rewind.  Less than 10 days prior I was texting my girlfriends that are scattered between here and NY, “ombre or red?”  With mixed responses, I thought with my lack of desire to maintain roots, ombre was the way to go.  I started checking salons on Yelp.  Within maybe 3 days, my Gilt app notified me new deals were available.  Todd Jameson, Nue Studio Salon, a salon I was already considering, had a deal specifically for an ombre or full set of highlights for $107 from $225.  I think it took me all of 6 seconds to weigh this decision and press purchase in my Gilt City app.

Ok, now my treatment is done, the shampoo girl doing her apprenticeship has put the 20/20 Experience and it is pouring, literal buckets outside.  I decided to have Karuna dry my hair anyways and commit to just chill until the rain lets up.  I am absolutely in love with the color so much so, I sent an inordinate amount of selfies.  So. Many. Selfies.  Here’s a little taste. Please excuse the sleepy eyes, Liv on a Friday night will do that to you.  Also, it’s copper highlights so it looks rather subtle in these pics.

selfie red hair no filter

Not only did I have a relaxing Saturday morning, I saved $118 or 52% on my treatment.  They also offer a 15% discount on products for any referrals, so make sure you tell them who told you – moi!  And finally, they also give you 30% off on your second visit.  Talk about customer service and retention, bravo Todd!  I had such a good experience I (someone who cuts/colors my hair maybe 2-3 times a year) was ready to set up my next appointment before leaving.

March Inventory

Miraculously, it appears as though I didn’t shop very much in March.  Well looks can be deceiving because I actually paid (GASP) full price for some awesome things I just had to have but that have no business being on this blog.  Oops.

I also attended the Syracuse v. Louisville game for free through an awesome hook up and some pretty cool Ultra/WMC parties but you already know that story too.  It’s all about networking and I can’t give up all my secrets.

Not to worry, though, I believe I am expecting some packages in the mail this week (two thumbs way up).

In the meantime, here is a short laundry list that sums up March but still doesn’t disappoint.

Purchase Original Actual
Matisse Studded cowboy boots $286 $48
60-pack of K-cups $39.99 $31.99
Carmar high-waisted black jeans $172 $70
Tahari black maxi skirt $80 $39.99
2 pairs of mens Levi’s jeans, 3 CK sweaters and BCBG dress $459 $50.28
MillyNY leather tote $465 $167
Lucca Couture crop $39.99 $15
Military jacket $172 $28
Club Level Hockey tickets for charity event $150 $50
BDG chambray button up shirt $59.99 $29.99
TOTAL $1,923 $530

My friends and I saved $1323 on nearly $2000 worth of stuff.  I initially suspected having saved less than normal but at about a 72% discount, March seems to be right in line with all the previous months.

Also, those Panther’s club level hockey tickets are still available and for this Sunday’s game.  I’d love to see you all there!

And here’s to a great start to Summer in Miami (cue Jim Jones track, circa 04/05).

Promo codes and free shipping are my GILTy pleasures

With frequent flights, a plethora of electronics and a long commute between a very casual work environment and a slightly more high  maintenance lifestyle, a new day bag/tote/carry-on/personal item/overnight bag seemed to become an increasingly desired item.

Somehow or another, at 27, I am blessed to still receive some money at Christmas.  Even better, like my younger self, I kept in the card in my bedroom as opposed to depositing it and dwindling it away on bills, booze, flights or rainy days at the mall.  I really wanted to put it towards a beautiful purse from a brand I normally wouldn’t splurge on myself.  This idea was slowly turned into wanting something of quality to fulfill a genuine need.  Although I can appreciate a great brand, I love quality and I prefer possessions fewer people have.  Every other female in Miami has a variation of some sort of signature Louie bag.  Would I turn one down?  Absolutely not, as I’m sure most of them didn’t.  Would I buy one for myself?  Depending heavily on the circumstance, unlikely.

I casually strolled through Saks off 5th, Bloomies outlet and Nordstroms Rack a couple times with no luck.  Then like the true savior they are, coupled with my “enough is enough, I need a bag” feelings,  GILT came through and now in some flash sale mayhem I had TWO bags that seemed appropriate for what I wanted.  One had more of a boho feeling, nice dark blue color, definitely a comfortable fit for travelling.  The other was more structured with subtle hardware detail  in a beautiful camel color .  Both pebbled leather, came with a long detachable strap, had similar dimensions and were originally between $400-$500.

milly pebbled leather tote

And the winner is…. Milly’s Andie Pebbled Tote.  I really wanted something more classic to offset my typically less classic travel looks.  This bag was originally $465 marked down to $239 plus I had GILT promo code in my email for 30% off and free shipping for two days which was also a lot of the motivation to choose a bag.  My final cost was $167 with my savings totaling a staggering $298 or 64% off.  AND I still have Christmas cash leftover.

Also, it should be noted that I bought this on my lunch from GILT’s awesome iPad app that has all my information stored.  When I double checked my shipping address I found my unit/box number was missing from the address.  I promptly called GILT support and the rep explained she could not adjust the address until it was shipped but would be able to make the adjustments with UPS.  I trusted this as I’ve had really good experiences with their customer service in the past.  She followed through and my bag came earlier than expected!
