shopping on the Tour de Rae

Shopping on the Tour de Rae wasn’t supposed to happen.  And, quite honestly, for the most part, it didn’t.  The Tour de Rae consisted of two weddings on bookend weekends in Upstate NY and in Beverly, MA, separated by 5 days in NYC and ending with a Sunday in Boston, yesterday.  With a wide variety of options, the amount of shopping I resisted is commendable (but you should totally check the 20 percent off everything NastyGal.com sale going on now).

Wednesday evening I was trying to connect with one of my guy friends that likes shopping equally (if not more) as me which was good because I could shop with him, for him and not myself.  In our evening plan making we were both separately trying to get to the gym and run some errands prior to meeting in Soho.  I arrived, surprisingly, on time, by 8:15.  Consequently, I ended up having about 30 minutes to kill.  Instead of opting for the few streets I am most familiar with, I found myself on Lafayette in some resemblance of an American Apparel outlet.  Destiny?  Probably.  You should definitely stop by.

I exercised extreme self-control and walked out with simply one skirt.  The high-waisted denim circle skirt was originally (and is still available on the website) for $52.  I got mine for $35 which is about a third off.  Circle skirts are awesome because they fit on your natural waist and are flattering over your hips.  Big hips, big fan, two thumbs up.

I ended up wearing it out to lunch with my combat boots and a sleeveless collared shirt Friday afternoon running around the city visiting people. And although I returned to Miami with more stuff than I left with this is only 1 of 2 items I bought during my 10 days out of Miami.  Hash tag PROUD.

life is too short to be uncomfortable or unnacttractive

I am LOVING this mild weather we are still experiencing.  Normally by this time, with the influx of EDM misfits and Spring Breakers, the humidity is creeping back in and the heat is becoming a constant, relentless 78+ plus degrees around the clock.

Not this year though.  I wish these cool nights would stick around until May because with the coolness comes layers, wider varieties of shoes and the desire to wear something more than a bathing suit.

With that being said, here is a  typical outfit of the day.  Unlike other posts where there’s dinner, drinks or doormen involved today’s outfit was perfect for errands and a pedicure and it’s compiled mostly of some of my favorite items on the blog.  There’s no reason to run around uncomfortable or unattractive.  Life is too short.

The gear:

BDG Denim Shirt $59.99 to $14.99 from Urban Outfitters

Tahari Skirt $80 to $39.99 from TJMaxx

American Apparel bodysuit, full price at $28.00

Steve Madden Sunkissed sandals $69 to $55 from Steve Madden store

Ashbury Griffin shades $85 to $35 at a Gilt Warehouse Sale in Miami

Sideways cross necklace from a boutique in Brooklyn Heights would’ve been $40 elsewhere, was $9

dog FREE

I accessorized with a couple bracelets and my Michael Kors which were gifts.  But really when I could’ve spent $333.99 (sans pup) and it only cost me $181.98.  My total savings on this casual ensemble $152.01, or easily enough for another entire outfit.

I may or may not have picked up some blog worthy items during this evening of “errands”.

February Inventory

I just don’t do well with short things.  Short weekends, short men, short months – I’m just not interested.  You’re just not for me.

February, essentially you just let March sneak up on me.  And your inconsistency?  It kills me.  Is it not enough you get to be short but then you also feel the need to mix it up every four years and take an extra day.  I don’t know who you think you are.

With that being said, here is February’s recap, five days into March.

Take that short month.

do you want a free bikini?

What kind of dumb question is that?  Did I want a free bikini from one of my most frequently shopped stores?  OBVIOUSLY.

Really, though, do you?  If you live in Florida or will be here in the next week, get in contact with me via Twitter @RaeWitte, Instagram: RaeWitte, email: thediscountdiary@gmail.com, text… ehh not really unless you have the number.  I’ll hook you up.

Last Thursday, I received an email from American Apparel exclaiming “FREE-kini” in the subject line.  What does that even mean?  It means they gave me a free bikini.  No really, a free bathing suit.  Spend $20, get it for free.  Conveniently, there will never come a day when I walk into an American Apparel and say “no, I can’t find anything to spend $20 on in here.”

I already own a black turtleneck crop and I love it but the neckline does prohibit me from wearing some of my necklaces with it.  To alleviate this, I decided to spend $24 and a plain black crop (below with a blingy, spikey and 2 chainz inspired necklaces).

photo (18)

The bikini with the South Beach worthy print was originally $29 for each piece.  The total with the crop would’ve been $87.  At $24, I saved 72%.

If you don’t find yourself down here in the land of no laws before February 11, I have another email for a free pair of AA mesh leggings through February 14 with a $25 purchase or more for both in-store and online purchases if you want it – do it.

2013 Kickoff, January Inventory

I am super pleased with The Discount Diary in it’s initial month of 2013.  We’ve got a new look.  A lot of you submitted your buys.  I had my first contributor.  My first travel tip is in the books.  Quite a collection of selfies have accumulated.  Everyone and their mother got or should be able to find a pair of perfect boots.  The ManRepeller FAVORITED my tweet on Twitter and read a post.  I like it.

But you know what time it is, the close of the first month.  So, without further adieu, here’s the damage.

double dipping

Let me apologize in advance to all my people in the northeast.  I am sorry that you are freezing, truly, deeply, sorry.

With that being said, my girlfriend and I left ourselves less than 40 minutes (including drive time) to get ready for a leisurely Sunday out drifting around Biscayne Bay.  I guess we shouldn’t have really questioned, do we want to go out on a boat for a day or not?  True to form, night or day, in a rush, I go straight to my staples, think your favorite LBD.  In this particular carpe diem-esque/YOLO instance I tore through my drawer for both pieces of my most basic bikini.  It is the American Apparel nylon tri-cot bikini in black.

Miami, January 2013

Funny thing is, I bought these matching pieces of the same bathing suit on separate websites at different times.  Both were originally $25.  I purchased the bottom on Gilt.com for only $4 and later got the top for $8 on Hautelook.com bringing my to grand total of $12.  I saved $13 or 60%.

So I spent only $13 on the Miami equivalent of an LBD, my favorite LBB, little black bikini.

countdown recap

the countdown

Let me know.  What is your favorite post from 2012?  Here is the Top 5 most viewed posts of last year!

5. A premature Merry Christmas

The American Apparel Belle Du Jour dress was just recently posted and managed to make it on the list of Top 5 posts of 2012.  I’ve since worn it out in New York with friends to a fashion show at WIP and later to Finale and 1Oak.  Definitely a good purchase.

4. Friends with Benefits
With the help of Troy Gordon, and him reblogging this on TheTroyReport.com, this post has come in at number four.  After having the pleasure of meeting him in NY through mutual friends and then all of them coming to Miami to bring in 2013, I would say I lived this post… repeatedly.  Thanks guys!

3. A Carrie Bradshaw Classic
THE white Halston… need I say more?

2. Women are Winers
This doesn’t surprise me one bit.  A fantastic event, at a reasonable price, with an incredible hostess at an innovative restaurant, The Federal.  Check them out for dinner!

And the most viewed post of 2012, definitely came as a shock to me.  I will be brutally honest with you, I get pageviews on this post DAILY, still.  It seems to have been a highly searched item over the holidays.
My sideways cross necklace from the little shop in Brooklyn Heights!  Who would’ve thought?  I easily wear this necklace 4 to 5 days a week and I love it!  See it below and take a look back at the original post.

Thanks for reading, following, commenting, liking and sharing!  You can find me on both Twitter and Instagram at RaeWitte.   And don’t forget, if you want me to share your story, email me at thediscountdiary@gmail.com (especially you boys!).  I resolve to keep shopping… and saving for 2013!

american apparel black bodysuit

all black everything

Perhaps it isn’t  a negative thing, but my shopping location seems to dictate the color of clothing I purchase.  Regardless, in the first leg of my 8 days out of Miami, I used my American Apparel Groupon I wrote about in December.  For $25, I had $50 to spend.

I was trying to be quick.  The store was cramped.  I was with friends.  I had my heavy coat, vest, gloves, etc and in a whirlwind of spandex, I walked out of a New York American Apparel with a new black dress and a new black bodysuit.

The sleeveless turtleneck dress and long sleeve double-U bodysuit’s original total would’ve been $72.

 selfie time!

After applying the $50 credit, I paid the difference of $22. The $25 credit plus the difference brought my total to $47.  I saved 35% or $25.  I easily could’ve used $100 credit they had available for $50.  I probably would have come home with more black clothes.  Next round, I’ll head to a Miami American Apparel.

winter upstate NY December

December Inventory

Ugh, December was a tough one.  One definitely does A LOT less shopping for oneself during the holidays but I also couldn’t write about gifts or any awesome discounts my friends hooked me up with.

Don’t fret! I still achieved some incredible savings and hopefully provided some helpful info otherwise.

Purchase Original Actual
Groupon for dinner at Dapur $130 $82
Art Basel kick-off party at the MoCA $35 $4
American Apparel Belle Du Jour dress $65 $52
Outfit of the day post $415 $113
Cynthia Vincent shoes  $375 $86
BCBG clutch $88 $31
Lucky Brand sweater $169 $39.99
Aldo red suede boots $100 $38
Jessica Simpson red suede booties $118 $25

.

The total of all the original costs for all posts in December came to $1,495.  Only $470.99 was spent, bringing the December discount to 68%.  I’ll take it considering the savings but I definitely spent a good majority on gifts and running up and down the east coast.  That’s the holidays though!
In the upcoming weeks, look for a lot of holiday leftovers, after Christmas deals, a little 2012 recap of your favorite posts and the staple great options for deals.
Happy New Year!
