#LESbeat how to explain it?
I’ll take it, frame by frame it.
To have ya all jumpin, shoutin, sayin it.
L is for Lower, ES for East Side, scratch ya temple,
the last Beat, well… that’s not that simple.

Wait… Yes it is. Three weeks into 2014, so just long enough that people have sustained full on cabin fever, Red Bull, Brandsway Creative and Matt Levine’s #LESbeat happened. In spite of the Polar Vortex, when offered a ticket to the secret venue, invite-only, open bar, charity benefiting, surprise act featuring… wait… did you catch all that? No questions asked, I was going along to check it out.

Having all of 20 minutes to change after the Agenda Emerge event and with the temp hanging around 1 degree, I threw on my timbs and my fur coat for what ended up being a surprisingly short wait outside. “One Night in Chinatown” took place at Mott Street’s, Grand Harmony. All optional donations benefited the Lower East Side Girl’s Club. Oh, I forgot to mention during he 11pm-4am event, there was also free food. I saw McDonald’s and plenty of Dim Sum. So we’re in, toes thawing, coats checked, open bar visited, the anticipation starts. ASAP Mob headlined the last #LESBeat. I was sure whoever was coming on would be well worth it, with the way the opening DJs were going in. Also, HUGE shout out to Red Bull, Brandsway and Matt Levine for the set up. People don’t even recognize the value in properly placing food stations, respective to bars, coat check, the stage, show production equip, etc. AND for keeping the crowd a comfortable size. Amazing, amazing job.

First, Matt and Kim came out for a DJ set. Matt played a solid set while Kim enjoyed her Modelo. Not mad at ya Kim, not mad. Another lap and trip to the bar before, my girlfriend asks, who do you think it’s going to be? Having no idea where to even start to guess, she asks what if it’s something old school, like Naughty By Nature? Within in LITERAL seconds, Treach and Vin Rock hit the stage and 80’s baby dominant room loses it.

LESBeat Naughty by Nature

Once they’re done a couple other DJ’s come out. I recognize DJ Zeke from my weekend visits down to St. John’s during college and another one drops some incredible Alicia Keys Fallin’ trap-esque goodness, which by the way, if anyone has it, send it?

I never would have guessed I’d be hitting all my high school homies the following day bragging that I saw The LOX come out appropriately murdering ‘Wild Out’! Randomly, earlier that week I had put a girlfriend on to ‘Favorite Drug‘ and was mentioning how I still hadn’t let go missing Jadakiss at Finale during the holidays. And there we were, in a random dim sum restaurant seeing The LOX reunited.

I skated directly after they went off, apparently missing DJ Slink. It had to happen. Overall, great party, extremely well executed with a really, really chill crowd.

Bae of the Day: Kilo Kish

With contributors to her latest EP, like Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover or Troy Barnes on Community, for the parents), SBTRKT, A$AP Ferg, Earl Sweatshirt and Jesse Boykins, I was ashamed that I wasn’t familiar with her work prior to The Fader’s Best of and Most Slept on in 2013 Mix.

My fellow Taurus (same birthday – hey girl!), Kilo Kish is casually sassy and sarcastic without all the extra (read: sexy, not trashy). Sans the excessively common, overly sexual references (Rihanna, Miley, Nicki) Kish is still talking men and relationships but perhaps speaking more for those of us that know exactly what we want and don’t have a problem saying it. On ‘trappin’ she says “engage me grammatically” and later “gave you all my thoughts but you wanted more.” She confidently values herself without being too serious and it’s dope.

“She says I need a man with morals and ambition, still shudder at that old tradition. Like that… but except for the fact that I get super bored.” Dear God with lyrics like this, blunt in her sweet voice AND Jesse Boykins on the track, YES times a million. I think a lot of women can relate to knowing what’s good for you and desiring otherwise. Enter, A$AP Ferg on love2k beckoning his Balenciaga mama and I’m all emoji heart eyes and praise hands.

Play all the way through. My faves are turquoise, better and love2k.

And my favorite from prior to K+, Navy.

Some things are the same

I know you’re feeling very Nothing Was The Same, new city, new look, how I switched it up with a new name?! It’s been a minute since we kicked it. Don’t worry, you know me. I’m just flexin’. Hold up, hold my phone… GOD, I can’t stop. Sorry.

During October, I was running around last minute trying to pick up something safe for a job interview. I hate safe. I was playing it super safe, at Marshall’s on Atlantic Ave. Upon coming across what was likely the least safe dress in the store, I tried it on. Worst.

The dress fit perfectly. I left it there.

December rolled around and similar to how I feel today about Drake’s NWTS, I still hadn’t let it go. On a lazy Saturday afternoon, I went back. Perhaps because it was long enough to fit me and a size small, it was still there. At this point having been marked down to practically nothing, I bought it.

The long sleeve, deep v cut, maxi is by Tart, which can be found at Nordstroms but is also frequently featured on Gilt. From around $130, I picked it up for $35.

For my first (frigid) New Year’s in New York I wore it to a friend’s party with my great aunt’s vintage fur.

Especially with the never ending Polar Vortex (check, my wardrobe is definitely reflecting a transition, 305 to my city, Brooklyn. But, with a New Year’s Eve in that dress with a New Year’s Day looking like this –  I get it, I get it.

Seriously, maybe I’ll go listen to We Made It or Trophies and give NWTS a little break.

I don’t want to say I’m not easily impressed but realistically, you won’t catch me fanning out over any sort of athlete, reality TV persona (EVER), or musician. Now let’s not get it twisted, they are accomplished in their own right, but we’re all human and all flawed, except Beyonce. She woke up like that, #FLAWLESS.

I am invested in the development of the relationship between creativity and business. Bey’s counterpart, yes, no question, I love most of his creative work but look at his business. Cue Jay’s voice, “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man!” He GAVE Rocawear away knowing he was going to run Def Jam and still control it. Or go back further, his “retirement”? As a junior in high school, I was devastated. As an adult, I’m golf clapping recognizing his “retirement” had to have ended contracts, cut losses and essentially put him in a position to take more control of his career.

My point being, if there is anything I want from any successful human, it’s their story, their knowledge. I don’t need a photo with them for my Instagram to caption “kickin’ it with the homie”, I need their 10 minutes filled with very best of advice.

Together Jyll Brown, of Remember Me Green, and I attended the AGENDA Emerge event, powered by Group Y, last week at NYU’s Skirball Center. AGENDA Emerge is the creative and brand building conference that takes place during the AGENDA Tradeshows. Check the videos below.

AGENDA NYC – July 2013 from Agenda Tradeshow on Vimeo.

We saw Bobby Hundreds (@bobbyhundreds), Johnny Cupcakes (@JohnnyCupcakes), Jeff Staple (@Jeffstaple) and Marc Ecko (@marcecko) speak. If you have any interest in branding or entrepreneurship, follow them.

During Polar Vortex 2.0, after some incredible magic tricks by Johnny Cupcakes, a full “class” settled into what we were told would be just as valuable as a college course. Each of the fellas briefly went through their backgrounds. A very common theme among them was to find your passion and work it to death.

Bobby Hundreds stressed, “Blood, Sweat and Years”, more literally meaning heart, hard work and long term investment. Johnny Cupcakes, recommended to get more excited about the process than the outcome. Stay in the moment and continually work on your passion. Similarly, Jeff Staple said, “Ride the wave”, pointing out he didn’t start working with the Fader with a plan to turn it into a sneaker deal with Nike, but it did. Take opportunities as they come, invest and be able to develop with them. Marc Ecko offered his “Authenticity Formula” to provide focus and guidance to the room full of creatives.

They were all VERY informative and engaging. Further, each speaker offered a promo code on their Twitters a couple days prior to the event, bringing the $100 ticket price down to $60 (if there’s a promo code, you already know I’m going to find it).

Something else notable and very refreshing, there weren’t any “walked up hill both ways” type of statements made by these guys. They knew, we recognized their path wasn’t easy, so they didn’t waste everyone’s time “lecturing”. It was explicitly real and honest. So. Much. Respect.

By definition

bon vi·vant
ˈbän vēˈvänt,ˌbôN vēˈväN/
  1. a person who enjoys a sociable and luxurious lifestyle.
  2. a person with refined taste, especially one who enjoys superb food or drink.

With that being said, I do enjoy a very social (preferably IRL, crazy) lifestyle as well as the finer things but one can always aim for better, no?

My shopping habits have remained consistent but naturally being in a new place brings a wider variety of new experiences. So, I’ll still include the occasional great purchase but I am looking forward to sharing more, be it event recaps, any inspo, my ‘refined taste’ in music, food, drink, baes, boys (HAAAAA), vocabulary, twitter handles, etc. Follow?

It’s good to be back.
